Training needed to enhance workforce skills

There are various benefits to encouraging people to engage in on-the-job training. Not only does it make them more effective in their current roles, but it also gives them additional skills that will be valuable to future employers.

As a result, the OECD is calling for more investment to be made in vocational training schemes, which it believes will make people more invaluable in the current jobs market.

The group emphasised the importance of work-based learning. Such programs should be eligible for government funding in developed nations in order to improve their attractiveness.

It’s also a good idea to assess the needs of students from the start of educational programs to ensure their skills are being driven in the right direction.

Enhancing basic literacy and numeracy skills must be high on the agenda, as the OECD’s 2013 Survey of Adult Skills found these to be particularly lacking in some areas.

Some countries already have strong vocational sectors, whereas others are not offering the one and two-year programs that certain people look for as opposed to academic qualifications.mn

The OECD’s Skills Beyond School: Synthesis Report highlighted that many vocational courses don’t provide the higher level skills needed in some jobs.

Junior managers and healthcare technicians are two sectors witnessing significant expansion, but the OECD indicates that skills simply aren’t meeting up to demand.

Data from the Department of Education shows Australia is attracting a growing number of overseas students, many of whom go in search of tertiary qualifications.

During the year to August, there were 11.9 per cent more enrolments by fee-paying students than the previous year, with 46.7 per cent of enrolments being at higher education establishments.
